.se is the national top level domain of Sweden and the obvious choice for websites with Swedish content. As an agent to .SE (Stiftelsen för Internetinfrastruktur) we offer registration and renewal of .se domain names. 1986 the Swedish Internet pioneer Björn Eriksen at KTH registered the country code .se as Sweden's top-level domain through NIC (Network Information Center) in USA (now replaced by ICANN/IANA, Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers and Internet Assigned Numbers Authority). The first .se domain, enea.se, were registered in 1983 by the firm Enea Data on which Björn was working at that time (see the whois info).
Between 1986 and 1997 Björn Eriksen, more or less without compensation, handled all registrations of .se domain names - a job that became bigger and bigger each year that went by. During the last year Björn registered 22 283 domains.
When the public interest in the .se domain increased KTH wanted to dispose of the business since they thought that it should not be included among the university's responsibilities. At this point the foundation IIS was formed, with the task to promote the Internet's infrastucture in Sweden and manage the .se domain. For this they created the operating company, NIC-SE (nowadays. SE).
Until 2003 the rules for the .se domain where very restrictive. Only companies and authorities had the right to register domain names with .se. Individuals were only allowed to register one domain each and with the suffix .pp.se. This made other domain types as .com and .nu very popular. When these rules were removed the number of registered .se domains increased from 106 349 at the end of 2002 to 214389 the following year.
In the same year .se also began to offer so-called IDN ( Internationalized Domain Names). This made it possible to register domain names with characters å ä ö ü and é.
Loopia became agent of .se in 2002 with the ambition to offer flexible and affordable management of .se domain names. By automating as much administration as possible we could offer easy domain name handling at low prices. This was a success and we have since the end of 2004 continuously registered more .se domains than any other .se agent.
